Eden-NET Roadmap

Extension of SON into the Core Network

The focus of SON within the industry to date has been mainly on self-healing, self-configuration and self-optimization of Radio Access Networks (RAN). Eden Rock is creating tremendous value for operators with the development of technology with additional software intelligence that integrates this functionality into both the core and RAN networks. Eden-NET’s core networking SON capabilities will deliver considerable improvements in network performance and end user experience.

Small Cell SON Probes

In order to keep pace with demand for mobile data, operators are adopting a new heterogeneous network deployment paradigm that involves underlying macro networks with small (femto/pico) cells. For decades, operators have relied upon certain macro network deployment methods and procedures but this approach is not suitable for the heterogeneous network paradigm where high volumes of small cells are deployed in a less controlled manner. If not deployed properly, the smaller cells can degrade the performance of the network; thus, diminishing the benefits of the additional small cells. 

Some work has been performed within the industry to define SON constructs for enabling more effective coexistence of the mix of different base station classes. Eden Rock is developing breakthrough technologies that take this one step further, whereby small cells have a new duality. They perform the desired base station functionality to increase network capacity while also serving as a SON probe within the network in order to improve the performance of surrounding base stations. Eden-NET’s small cell SON probe interaction has the potential to essentially turn small cell underlays, typically a major challenge for operators, into a substantial benefit, improving overall network performance.

Multi-Site Carrier Aggregation – Beyond LTE-A Networks

Eden-NET is an innovative SON solution that supports current 3G and LTE Release 8/9 network deployments and provides feature evolution for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) networks and beyond. LTE-Advanced introduces the concept of Carrier Aggregation (CA) to boost the capacity of LTE-Advanced sectors to 1Gbps and beyond. Eden Rock is building upon the Carrier Aggregation concept within Eden-NET to further improve capacity and cell edge performance of LTE-Advanced networks. Such improvements work in tandem with, and are orthogonal to, other LTE-Advanced capacity enhancement work items, such as Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) and Enhanced Multiple Antenna Transmissions.
